Radio DJ Tony Blackburn will be celebrated in a special to be broadcast 50 years to the day since his first radio broadcast.
The anniversary celebration will air on all BBC Local Radio stations across the country on Friday 25th July at 7pm. The three hour live programme will come live from BBC London 94.9 studios and will celebrate Tony Blackburn’s work since he first hit the airwaves on pirate radio ship Radio Caroline.
There will be performances and interviews from celebrities including Smokey Robinson, Beverley Knight and Jaki Graham. Former Radio 1 colleagues Noel Edmonds and Pat Sharp will also be on-hand for the celebrations. Blackburn hosted the first Radio 1 Breakfast Show when the station launched in 1967. He stayed in the job for five years.
“I can’t believe it’s been 50 years! Being a radio presenter is the greatest job in the world and I’ve loved every minute. I can’t wait to share some of my favourite tracks, people and memories on air with listeners around the country. I’m really looking forward to doing the show, it will be good fun.” – Tony Blackburn
Tony Blackburn continues to host shows on several local BBC radio stations and Pick of the Pops on BBC Radio 2. Part of the special programme will be recorded in front of a live studio audience this coming Monday.
