News sites yesterday announced the death of a well known personality who was still very much alive at the time of publication.
Online news websites rushed yesterday to break the news that football coach Joe Paterno had died, even though he was still alive.
On Saturday evening The Penn State student news website said that the coach had passed away. According to CNN, the news was picked up by CBS Sports website among others.
The information was then posted across Twitter to what has now become the norm. A short while later the Paterno family confirmed that Joe had not died, but was in a serious condition.
Joe Paterno died this morning (Sunday), confirmed by his family.
He was the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 to 2011. With 409 victories, Paterno is the most victorious coach in NCAA FBS history. He recorded his 409th victory on October 29, 2011, then his career ended 11 days later with his dismissal from the team on November 9, 2011 as a result of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal.
He died 74 days later, of complications from lung cancer.
