Jason Donovan has said that he might consider a return to Neighbours if Kylie Minogue, Guy Pierce and Craig McLachlan were involved.
Speaking on ITV’s Loose Women today, Jason initially said he had no plans to return to Neighbours but when quizzed by Jane Moore on whether he would consider a return for the 30th anniversary, he said: “The thing about something like that is that it’s got to be a group effort, it can’t just be one or two, possibly if Kylie and Guy and Craig [returned], there’s a bunch of them.”
When asked by Ruth Langsford whether Kylie’s tweet saying she’d bought overalls signalled a return for her character Charlene Robinson, Jason said: “It’s quite ambiguous. She might have just bought them. The problem is the publicity would overshadow any contribution you would make. I don’t know at this stage. Funnily enough my dad has been in Neighbours on and off for a few years so he’s making my contribution.”
Donovan became a teen-favourite as Scott Robinson in the Grundy Television soap opera, the on-screen relationship with Minogue’s tom boy Charlene Ramsay lead to the series gaining impressive ratings for BBC One with the lunchtime and teatime showings combined to bring the network at its peak over twenty million viewers.
Both Kylie and Jason last appeared on Ramsay Street in 1989 however their television son Daniel Robinson appeared in the show earlier this year played by Tim Phillipps.
“Charlene and Scott are the quintessential love story who have the happy ending. More than 25 years on, they are still remembered worldwide. It is fantastic that we can re-open this chapter of Neighbours’ history for a new generation of viewers. I would love to see Kylie and Jason return to Ramsay Street. They were part of such an iconic period for the show and fans remember them with such affection. We do ask former actors to return from time to time, and with the 30th anniversary looming, it would be a perfect opportunity for them to do that.” – Neighbours producer Jason Herbison speaking in April 2014
Neighbours airs in the UK on Channel 5.
