Claire King as Kim Tate in Emmerdale

Former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress, and recent Celebrity Big Brother contestant, Claire King is to join Coronation Street.

King is to appear in the ITV serial for a short while later this year playing barmaid Erika, who arrives in Weatherfield to catch up with her mate Liz McDonald. The pair met in Spain when Erika landed a job at Liz’s bar, so when she arrives back in England Erika seeks Liz out.

However its businessman Nick, played by Ben Price, who she sets her sights on seducing and in the process puts a spring back in his step after a disastrous twelve months which saw him suffer a severe brain injury and split from wife Leanne.

“I am beyond thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street playing the funny and feisty Erika who looks certain to ruffle a few feathers once her high heels hit those world famous cobbles! A stint in Corrie is one of those ticks on most actor’s bucket list of jobs you dream of doing, so I can’t wait to start filming in a few weeks time!” – Claire King

Claire starts filming next month and will be on screen for a few weeks in December before Erika jets back off to Spain at the end of the year – leaving Nick wondering exactly what hit him!

Coronation Street, in an apparent creative rut, with dwindling ratings, has been seeking out new ideas to improve its plots and viewing figures.

“Erika is a woman who lives life to the full, Nick doesn’t stand a chance once she has set her sights on him, but he’s not complaining! We are delighted to have Claire on board to play Erika, she is a fabulous actress who will be a great addition to the cast.” – Producer Stuart Blackburn

In 2012 King made a guest appearance in her second on-screen prison governor role in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks, but is best known for her roles as Bad Girls’ jail boss Karen Betts and scheming super-bitch Kim Tate in Emmerdale.

Coronation Street airs on ITV, UTV and STV on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.
