The BBC will cease to broadcast an omnibus edition of EastEnders from April 2015.
The re-transmission of each week’s episodes launched not long after the serial in 1985, and for the majority of its run has occupied a Sunday afternoon slot on BBC One, however it currently airs Friday nights on the channel.
EastEnders Executive Producer, Dominic Treadwell-Collins says the decision to discontinue the omnibus is down to decreased demand following a “detailed analysis” of audience data.
In a letter to The Writers Guild, he cites the availability of episodes on BBC iPlayer as the reason for the falling demand but assures readers that the BBC is committed to EastEnders.
“EastEnders remains at the heart of the BBC One schedule and continues to be one of the most popular programmes on British television. The BBC is absolutely committed to the future of EastEnders as illustrated by the huge investment its making in the Elstree site and the re-building of the EastEnders Lot, which is due to start next year.” – Dominic Treadwell-Collins
EastEnders airs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on BBC One
