Strictly Come Dancing

Television personality Gregg Wallace has become the first to leave the BBC One showbiz dance contest in the 2014 series.

“I have to say it is the most terrifying thing I have ever, ever done. What I really liked most of all was practice, coming in here [the studio] really scared me. If I come back again, can you just watch me while I practice?! – Gregg Wallace

Following last week’s first live show where nobody was eliminated, this week Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman declared the battle for the ballroom officially underway. Lines opened for the viewers to cast their vote for the first time this series; Mrs Browns Boy’s star Jennifer Gibney and professional partner Tristan MacManus and MasterChef Judge Gregg Wallace and his partner Aliona Vilani, became the first two couples to face the dance-off.

The fifteen couples each danced in a bid to impress the viewers at home – as well as judges Len Goodman, Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli & Craig Revel Horwood – in the studio. The judges’ scores were combined with their scores from last week, and then these overall scores were amalgamated with the results of the viewers’ votes to decide the lowest scoring two couples facing the dance off.

Both couples then performed their routines again; Jennifer and Tristan did their Waltz to Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin and Gregg and Aliona performed their Charleston to ‘Hey Good Looking’ by Ray Charles in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition.

After both couples had danced a second time the judges delivered their verdicts:

Craig chose to save Jennifer saying: “Both couples improved enormously but I have to save Jennifer and Tristan.”

Darcey chose to save Jennifer saying: “I enjoyed both performances, both deserved to stay, but the couple I am going to save is Jennifer and Tristan.”

Bruno chose to save Jennifer saying: “I have to go with the most accomplished couple this evening and that is Jennifer and Tristan.”

Head Judge Len Goodman said, “I would have agreed with my colleagues, it would have been unanimous.”

Sunday’s Results show featured a performance from Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter.

Next week’s show (Saturday 11th October at 6.30pm ) will be the first of Strictly Come Dancing’s show-stopping themed weekends this series with the stars moving to a movie themed dance contest.
