Zombie drama The Walking Dead, starring Andrew Lincoln, hit an all-time high on Sunday evening.
The fifth season of the post-apocalyptic series kicked off on Sunday evening on FX with a whopping 17.3 million viewers. Those figures represent a series high for The Walking Dead; it’s previous best ratings figure was 16.1 million viewers for its fourth season premier. Of the 17.1 million viewers to tune in on Sunday evening 11 million of them were in the all important 18-49 demo.
The 17.1 million viewers is a colossal figure for a cable broadcaster and is well above ratings for many broadcast dramas. FX will be delighted by The Walking Dead’s performance especially as it has just renewed the series for a sixth season.
A pilot for a companion series has also been commissioned; the series would be set in the same universe as Walking Dead but is unlikely to feature any cast members of the parent series.
