FX Axes The Bridge

The Bridge, FXCrime drama series The Bridge has been axed by broadcaster FX after two seasons.

The drama, developed by Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid, failed to capture audiences imaginations and didn’t win much favour with the critics either. The Bridge starred Mexican actor Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger and concluded its second season earlier this month with just 1 million viewers.

The poor rating performance of The Bridge is likely the reason behind its demise. The drama is based on the Danish series Broen or Bron in Sweden where the original drama also aired; it was a co-production between the two countries. The English name for the series is The Bridge – hence its American name – and is part of the Nordic Noir genre.

The Bridge followed in the footsteps of the hit drama The Killing, Forbrydelsen in Danish, which starred Sofie Grabol as detective Sarah Lund. The series became a worldwide hit after it was broadcast on BBC Four in the UK. The Killing was also remade for American audiences with three seasons airing on AMC and the fourth on Netflix.

The Bridge was also remade for British audiences in a co-production between Sky Atlantic and the French broadcaster Canal+. The remake starred Stephen Dillane and Clemence Poesy and a second series is in development though has not been officially commissioned.
