ONE TO WATCH: BRITNEY AT BREAKING POINT, CHANNEL 5 at 9pm

In 2007, pop princess Britney Spears was at the centre of one of the most public high-profile celebrity meltdowns of all time. Using first-hand accounts from witnesses, this documentary reveals the barely believable sequence of events that became the most talked-about media story of the decade.

Stressed by the relentless press attention over her divorce and children, Britney Jean Spears embarked on an extraordinary series of events that created headlines across the world. This film explores the dramatic events of the time, up to her eventual hospitalisation and finally rehabilitation.

At the heart of the action were the paparazzi, dozens of whom followed her every move on the lookout for the perfect photo op. This was the era before social media took hold, so the paps were the gateway to celebrity access—and they struck tabloid gold with Britney on a descending spiral of erratic behaviours.

A beloved aunt’s death from cancer. The dramatic split from husband Kevin Federline. The custody battle over their children. The escape from rehab after less than a day. The shaved head, the spontaneous tattoo parlour visit, shaving her legs in public at the pool on the top of the Mondrian Hotel, assaulting a paparazzo with an umbrella, running over another pap’s foot, drawing the emergency services to her home, and much more.

For several months this behaviour created a media frenzy with few parallels in modern tabloid history. With contributions from some of the key players and celeb commentators, including gossip queen Perez Hilton and the model who played Britney’s boyfriend in her steamy video for “Make Me…”, Love Island’s hunky Paul Knops, this film reveals the truth behind the shocking headlines.
