The Yorkshire Television personality has passed away ITV has confirmed.
Redvers Kyle, who worked across several ITV companies over four decades, although is best remembered for his work on YTV, has died aged 86.
Best known in later years to viewers in the Yorkshire region, Redvers Kyle first became a popular personality with viewers in the London area of ITV in the 1950s.
Redvers was born in 1929 in the city of Germiston, East Rand of Gauteng, South Africa and it was in South Africa where he began his broadcasting career. While at university in Johannesburg he joined the African Broadcasting Company as a presenter. He also enjoyed writing music and items of fiction. While at university he was bestowed an award for the ‘best production and individual performance’ in A Boy With A Cart as part of a nationwide South African drama festival.
In 1952 Redvers Kyle relocated to the United Kingdom, working primarily as a school teacher initially, however also worked on a freelance basis for BBC Radio and Television. In September 1955 with the arrival of Independent Television in Britain, he switched to ATV London, the ITV weekend company, as a presenter and also joined ITN News as a voice artist recording narrations for the filmed news and feature reports.
In February 1956 he joined the ITV weekday broadcaster Associated-Rediffusion as a continuity announcer. In April 1964 he became Chief Announcer at the re-branded Rediffusion London, taking over from Leslie Mitchell. He remained with the company until its demise in July 1968 – and rather than switch to the incoming weekday ITV London station Thames Television Kyle instead headed north to Leeds.
Joining Yorkshire Television from its inception Redvers Kyle would become one of the best-known voices of the YTV station across the 1970s and 80s. Semi-retiring in 1993 Redvers continued to occasionally be heard on the YTV airwaves, as well as on Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as a stand-in announcer until 1998.
Redvers Kyle also hosted numerous television series for ITV across the years including popular children’s productions such as magazine series Tuesday Rendezvous.
