BBC Radio 2 is to host a music special with American jazz star Gregory Porter.
Porter will perform a live concert exclusively for the beeb’s In Concert series presented by Jo Whiley. The performance will take place at the famous Maida Vale Studios on Thursday the 21st of July, to be broadcast live on Radio 2, as well as in vision via the stations website and the BBC Red Button.
“Music of all genres plays a huge part in Radio 2’s success, and since he was first played on the network by Jamie Cullum in 2010 and then supported consistently across all shows on the Radio 2 Playlist, Gregory has established himself as a firm favourite with Radio 2 listeners. I’m delighted that we can present this unique jazz vocalist live in concert on the radio and on BBC Red Button for listeners and viewers to enjoy.” – Jeff Smith, Radio 2 Head of Music
Fresh from his appearance on the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, Gregory will be performing tracks from his new album Take Me To The Alley, as well as songs from his three previous albums, including his 2013 album Liquid Spirit, for which he won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Earlier in the day, listeners will be able to hear two exclusive tracks from Gregory’s sound check in the BBC Radio Theatre on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 show at 11am, plus an interview ahead of the evening’s performance on Simon Mayo’s Drivetime Show (5-7pm). Jo Whiley will host an exclusive webchat with Gregory – which will be broadcast online and also the BBC Radio 2 YouTube Channel. Jo will also catch up with him for an interview post-performance.
There will be a Golden Ticket giveaway opportunity on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Wednesday 20th July with Chris doing a live ringback to the winner during the show the following day. Applications for free tickets can be made available via the Radio 2 website where terms and conditions for all tickets can be found.
“I can’t wait to perform for BBC Radio 2 in the hallowed halls of Maida Vale Studios, where so many of the artists who have inspired me have performed.” – Gregory Porter
