Following on from the success of the original The Professionals proving a hit for Network Releasing on Blu-ray and DVD the company now turn their attention to the follow on production, The New Professionals.
Produced for Sky 1, the series hit the air in 1999. While the original show had aired from London Weekend Television across the ITV network to millions of viewers the limited viewing figures for the Sky series ensured, sadly, only one series was made.
It was of course only a matter of time before The Professionals would be revisited, the original series airing from 1977 to 1983 had become a phenomenal global success with reruns even a decade after the production ended proving a hit with viewers.
“The Professionals thrilled audiences for four decades, gaining a body of devoted fans and an enduring cult status; in the late 1990s its legend received a new lease of life with this explosive series.” – Network Releasing
The 1990s spin-off starred veteran British actor Edward Woodward as Harry Malone (The Equalizer), the head of an expanded CI5, now a global agency with a multinational body of highly skilled operatives whose job is to combat 21st century threats in the form of global terrorism, ethnic cleansing, the mass slaughter of protected species and the emergence of powerful organised crime syndicates.
The original ensemble of three lead characters Doyle, Bodie and their boss Cowley – played by Martin Shaw, Lewis Collins and Gordon Jackson – were replaced by a new group of three men and a woman with Colin Wells (Crossroads) playing Sam Curtis, Kal Weber (Mile High) as Chris Keel and Lexa Doig (Stargate SG-1) as Tina Backus joining Woodward as the key actors.
Guest stars include Charlotte Cornwell (The Krays), Gayle Hunnicutt (The Legend of Hell House), Denis Lill (Batman), Patrick Mower (Emmerdale), Michael Brandon (Dempsey and Makepeace), David Threlfall (Shameless) and Ray Lonnen (The Sandbaggers). The CI5 team were responsible to a Minister, played by Charlotte Cornwell (Rock Follies).
In a similar format to the original series Mark One/LWT production the show is set in a fictional government agency CI5 aka the Civilian Intelligence Department 5 and included impressive action sequences and high crime drama. Featuring scripts by The Professionals’ original creator Brian Clemens, this four-disc set features all thirteen episodes, complete and uncut.
Special features include a television trailer, promotional films, a London Tonight feature as seen on ITV, Electronic Press Kit, Image Gallery and PDFs of the scripts.
