The search for a new vocal superstar begins this coming weekend as The Voice UK launches on ITV following its move from BBC One after five series.
Global music legends will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, Sir Tom Jones and Gavin Rossdale embark on their quest to uncover the best vocal talent that Britain has to offer, with this year’s winner scooping a life changing record contract with Polydor Records. Emma Willis presides over the action as each vocalist, or singing duo, seeks to claim a place in one of the coaches’ teams at the Blind Auditions.
Earlier today Sir Tom spoke to ITV and Lorraine Kelly about returning to the talent show and also the recent loss of his wife Linda, who he had known since he was a child.
“When she passed it was so sudden, in April, she found out she had lung cancer and it was too late, it was terminal, and it was very, very quick. So it really knocked the stuffing out of me because we’d been together since we were kids you see. We were kids together. And she has always been there so it was a strange thing.
“I didn’t know whether I would be able to carry on and I just didn’t know but, you know, my family, and my son and my daughter-in-law who are also my managers and Mark my son, he said, ‘look if you don’t sing, you’ll die, you’ll just shrivel up and die, do you want to do that?’ I said, ‘no not really’. So we tried it, we sort of broke-in easily. I got some musicians together and we tried some songs out because I didn’t know whether I could sing and then we did.”
Sir Tom on his ATV series for ITV ‘This Is Tom Jones’ in 1968
Sir Tom has been a pop icon since the mid-1960s with over 100 million records sales to his name and thirty-six Top 40 hits in the United Kingdom over those six decades. Jones joined The Voice UK when it launched in 2012 on BBC One. A popular coach on the show viewers were left stunned when the beeb unceremoniously axed him from the programme for the 2016 series, bosses drafted in Culture Club singer and songwriter Boy George as his replacement. ITV however have reversed the ‘barmy’ decision and reinstated Sir Tom on the panel.
“It’s saving my life. Music is more important even to me now than it was before because it’s just…. and she would want me too. And coming back on The Voice because she [wife Linda] loved The Voice… And she couldn’t believe it, she said, ‘are you sure you don’t want to do The Voice anymore?’ when it happened [when he was sacked from The Voice UK] and I said, ‘no, no it’s not my choice’ and she said, ‘you must be joking!’
“She was annoyed so, but then she passed before..[knowing he was back on The Voice UK] but she would be very happy that I am back on it.”
