Newsnight{jcomments off}The BBC has received hundreds of complaints about comments made by the historian David Starkey on Newsnight about the riots that gripped London and other English cities last week.

The corporation has so far received nearly 700 complaints from viewers regarding Starkey’s comments on Newsnight in which the historian said “whites have become black”. The corporation has received a small number of complaints though in favour of Starkey and saying the debate on Newsnight was poorly chaired and he was “unfairly” treated – according to Media Guardian.

The backlash against Starkey’s comments has spread beyond complaints to the BBC with Ofcom also confirming it had received complaints from angry viewers. A petition has also reportedly been launched demanding the BBC issue a public apology for airing Starkey’s comments – so far the petition has nearly 4000 signatures. The Labour leader Ed Miliband has also waded into the controversy by labelling the comments “disgusting and outrageous”.
