The BBC has revealed the first official picture from Sherlock ahead of its much anticipated series three return.

The image shows Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock  meeting up with Doctor John Watson, played by Martin Freeman. Series two ended with Sherlock faking his own death by jumping from a roof to escape Professor James Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott.

Sherlock is written and created by Steven Moffat and  Mark Gatiss and inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first two series have been a critical success and reached audience figures of over 10 million viewers.

An air date has not been confirmed by the BBC but viewers in the US can see series 3 from 19th January 2014 on PBS, as part of the Masterpiece series, which also includes Downton Abbey.
