Clare Balding has revealed her grandmother said she was ‘disgusting’ for being a lesbian.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs the BBC and Channel 4 sports presenter said she had to discuss her sexuality with some family members after a tabloid revealed she was gay. She went on to tell presenter Kirsty Young that it caused a silence between the pair for sometime after.
I said ‘Grandma, I need to talk to you’ and she said ‘Yes I should think you do’, I said ‘Have you seen the paper?’ and she said ‘Yes and I think it’s disgusting’.
I said ‘What do you mean? The invasion of my privacy or my lifestyle choice’ and she said ‘Both’ and I didn’t talk to her for about six months after that which was pretty difficult.
Clare Balding is one of BBC Sports key presenters hosting a number of programmes, she was also coaxed over to head the new look Channel 4 Racing last year. Balding is in a relationship with presenter Alice Arnold.
Desert Island Discs with Clare Balding airs today at 11.15am on BBC Radio 4.
