EyeSpy: Remembering Googie Withers

ATV Today’s EyeSpy celebrates the actress Googie Withers who has died aged 94. Withers was best known in her later years for her role in LWT’s prison drama, Within These Walls.

Withers started her performance career as a dancer before switching to movies back in 1935. Films included Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes and Night and the City. In 1958 she moved to Australia, but returned often to Britian to work on television and in film. In 1979 it is suggested that soap producer Reg Watson asked her to play the part of Erica Davidson a govenor in his Australian prison drama Prisoner: Cell Block H, which she declined.

In the 80s she starred in a number of BBC dramas making her last ITV appearance in the 1990 drama Ending Up. Her final film role was in the 1996 Australian production, Shine. Here we celebrate possibly her best loved role, that of prison govenor Faye Boswell in 1970s drama, Within Theses Walls. Googie Withers died in Sydney Australia on Friday.
