Comedian and chat-show host Graham Norton has branded presenter Christine Bleakley ‘bonkers’ for her decision to quit the BBC earlier this year. Bleakley decided to leave the BBC and her presenting role on the evening magazine series The One Show to join her former colleague Adrian Chiles at ITV. The two currently present ITV’s re-launched breakfast magazine programme Daybreak together and as part of their deal with ITV have also been promised other presenting duties. Adrian Chiles also fronts the broadcasters football coverage juggling his duties on Daybreak around the football matches that ITV screen.
‘I can understand why Adrian Chiles did it, but Christine Bleakley – bonkers, ’ he said before adding that presenting The One Show was a ‘fantastic job’.Do you know when they come in? 3 o’clock! And they finish at 7.30′ – Graham Norton speaking at the Radio Festival
ITV bosses hoped that the Bleakley and Chiles partnership would lure in viewers for Daybreak and would reverse the ratings decline ITV has suffered in the breakfast slot for some years. However, there has been a big backlash against Daybreak with viewers unimpressed with the new show and demanding the return of GMTV. Ratings have dropped since its launch with last week hitting a new low of 630,000 viewers while Breakfast on BBC One recorded a high of 1.8 million viewers.
