James Arthur has won The X Factor 2012.

Arthur triumphed over Jahmene Douglas to win the singing competition in tonight’s live final held at Manchester Central.

The pair were both mentored by Nicole Scherzinger who said of Arthur’s win: “I’m just so proud of him.”

Upon hearing the result, Arthur thanked fans for supporting him, before addressing Scherzinger and adding: “You’ve been the best mentor, and not only that you’ve been an amazing friend.”

He will release a cover of Shontelle’s Impossible as the winner’s single with all profit raised going to children’s charity Together For Short Lives.

Earlier in the show the pair each performed two songs, firstly their favourite song of the series with Arthur singing Let’s Get It On and Douglas performing Angels, before they went on to sing what would become their winner’s singles – Arthur sang Impossible, while Douglas sang Let It Be by The Beatles..

Of Arthur’s victory, Douglas said it had been a “blessing to share the stage with such a talent”.

The X Factor is expected to return to ITV1 in Summer 2013.
