Joe McElderryJoe McElderry, winner of last years’ X Factor, has warned the remaining hopefuls that the hit ITV series is not a popularity contest and they will be judged on their voices only. His warning follows last night’s results show in which Mary Byrne was voted off The X Factor leaving the Cher Lloyd, One Direction, Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle remaining in the competition.

“It’s now down to who is the best on the night and the final performance. They have to smash it.” – Joe McElderry quoted in The Sun

McElderry beat last year’s finalists Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon to win the 2009 X Factor. Over the weekend Stacey Solomon was crowned the winner of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. While McElderry has previously said he is backing Cher Lloyd to win this years X Factor he said last week that boy-band One Direction had a good chance of winning as well.

McElderry’s new single Somebody Wake Me Up is out today from his first album, Wide Awake.
