VD-Klaus-medVampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec has discussed the forthcoming spin-off from the series.

Last week it was revealed that The CW are eying a spin-off from The Vampire Diaries and a backdoor pilot will air later this year, as part of the show’s fourth season, to test the waters. The spin-off, titled The Originals at the moment, will be set in New Orleans and focus on the character of Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Fans of the Vampire Diaries are keen to find out more details about the potential new series and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly producer Julie Plec has discussed the spin-off.

The “back-door” pilot episode will air in April and Plec told EW what viewers can expect from the episode and how Klaus leaves Mystic Falls and ends up in New Orleans. “He gets word that some people are making a move against him that might concern him. So he heads to New Orleans to try to figure who’s plotting against him and what they’re up to. And in unfolding that mystery, it takes him back to a town that several hundred years ago, he was actually one of the original settlers of and helped build. He reacquaints himself with a vampire that he actually turned back in the day, Marcel”

The character of Marcel has yet to be cast but fans will probably be more keen to find out which other Vampire Diaries characters could crop up in the spin-off, should it get a commission. Of fan favourite Elijah (Daniel Gillies) Plec told EW “There is always a role for Elijah” but would depend on the actor’s schedule. As for the character of Rekebah (Claire Holt) Plec said “I think she’s another character that would be a tremendous asset to both shows. So it really all comes down to Rebekah’s future, and Claire’s future with Rebekah, and all that stuff that remains undetermined.”

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW tonight, with the episode After School, following its mid-season break. The “back-door” pilot for The Originals is currently scheduled to air on April 25th. Viewers in the UK are going to have to wait a little longer for the return of The Vampire Diaries because as yet ITV2 have not revealed a return date.
