Eddie ‘The Eagle’ EdwardsIt’s the show that sunk television to new format lows, yet managed to pull in reasonable viewing figures thanks to little competition from BBC One, scantily clad contestants and Olympian Tom Daley’s bulge.

In tonight’s final British Olympic skier Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards took the top spot of the diving contest after a viewer vote saw him up against Benidorm actor Jake Canuso. TV presenter and interior designer Linda Barker came third.

“It’s been fantastic. The audience has been wonderful. Thank you for getting behind me.” Edwards said.

The programme, while peaking at over five million viewers, has been described as the worst programme in ITV’s history however thanks to plenty of flesh and popular diver Tom Daley, the series has performed reasonably well for the broadcaster as well as apparently reviving a speedo sales.

Retailer Debenhams has said that skimpy swimwear purchases have increased, at one point up by over 50%, since the series began.

The show has been described as  “water torture”“pathetic” and “a hastily hurled together omnishambles”.

“There is no going back, ITV have not just scraped the barrel they’ve dug into the sewer benieth,” Says Telly critic Queenie, adding, “that’s it now, its all going to go down hill from now on as viewers have clearly given the message, ‘sod the quality, let’s just see the flesh’. Although I’m not sure even I want to see Eddie Edwards in tight swimwear ever again dear.”

Betting outlet Paddy Power revealed yesterday they were facing a payout of over £27,000 if Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards won Splash!

“We’re staring down the barrel of a gun on this one, it’s safe to say that we underestimated Eddie and the public have caught us with our pants down.” said a spokesperson for Paddy Power yesterday.

The bookie had originally priced Eddie as a 20/1 outsider but strong backing and even stronger performances had seen the former ski jumper’s odds dive to a skimpy 1/6.
