BBC’s controller of Drama Ben Stephenson and BBC One controller Danny Cohen have commissioned the new drama for Saturday evenings. Provisionally titled Atlantis the drama 13 part drama is from Merlin producers Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy and created by Howard Overman; creator of Misfits and BBC Four’s adaptation of Dirk Gently.
Atlantis will start filming in April in Wales and Morocco. The BBC will hope the new drama captures Saturday evening audiences in the same way as Merlin and Doctor Who. The fantasy drama Merlin came to a conclusion at Christmas after five seasons on-air. The drama regularly attracted audiences of over 6 million viewers in its tough Saturday evening slot often airing against the X Factor.
Atlantis is slated to air on BBC One in the Autumn. The new drama is part of a slate of commissions announced by Ben Stephenson on Monday 11th February not only for BBC One but also BBC Two and BBC Four. Popular drama’s Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise have also been renewed for second seasons.
