The awards will be held on the 16th March in New York City and the Vito Russo Award is given to an openly gay, lesbian or transgender media figure who has worked to promote equality. Previous recipients of the prestigious award include Rosie O’Donnell and Sir Elton John.
“By sharing his own experiences as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that LGBT people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric.” – Herndon Graddick, GLAAD President
The GLAAD Media Awards will be the first LGBT event attended by Cooper since his decision last year to formally come out. The journalist had been the subject of speculation regarding his sexuality but had never directly addressed it. However, last Summer he decided to publicly state his sexuality for the first time.
As well as working as an anchor for CNN the journalist also has his own syndicated chat-show Anderson Live which has run for two seasons. In October it was revealed that a third season would not be ordered due to low ratings.
