Bergerac Turns 30

BBC One 1970sJersey based detective drama Bergerac, which starred John Nettles, marked its 30th anniversary earlier this week.

The popular detective drama was written by Robin Banks Stewart who came up with the series following the cancellation of his previous series Shoestring which starred Trevor Eve. Bergerac revolved around John Nettles character of Jim Bergerac a detective who worked for the Jersey Police’s department for foreigners on the Channel Island. Bergerac ran between 1981 and 1991 and was hugely popular with audiences – it’s iconic theme tune is instantly recognisable.

Starring alongside Nettles in the drama was Terence Alexander as his father-in-law Charlie Hungerford who often became tangled up in Jim’s investigations in some way or another. Bergerac’s ex wife Deborah (Deborah Grant) was also part of the series for a while but was later written out. Other cast members over the course of its run included Louise Jameson as Susan Young, one of Bergerac’s many girlfriends. Actress Liza Goddard played the recurring character of Philippa Vale who cropped up over the seasons usually sporting various disguises. Despite being a detective drama the season dealt with supernatural elements too from its fourth season onwards it usually had an episode a year that dealt with such issues from Viking curses to Atlantis.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the series a reunion was recently held on Jersey with cast members such as John Nettles, Liza Goddard and Louise Jameson all attending. Bergerac has been released on DVD and is regularly repeated on cable with UKGold, UKTV Drama and more recently Yesterday all having repeated the series.
