Kevin Laffan may be best known as the man who created Yorkshire Television’s Emmerdale Farm, however he also provided the scripts to many other productions including movie The Best Pair of Legs in the Business which is to be released on DVD later this month.
Laffan began his writing career in the theatre producing stage plays, by 1963 he was also writing for television. His first big success was the twice weekly serial Castle Haven, which launched in 1969, set in Yorkshire coastal town, focusing on the residents of a block of flats.
In 1972 it was Emmerdale Farm that brought him his biggest success, the Beckindale village based soap opera still runs today as one of the cornerstones of the ITV schedules.
Laffan could however also bring serious drama to the screens with 1971’s Decision to Burn starring Anthony Hopkins and a lighter comedy drama with Reg Varney and The Best Pair of Legs in the Business of 1968.
The latter was first an individual ITV Playhouse Presents… however was remade for the big screen in 1972. The film version is now to be released on DVD by Network.
Reg Varney, of On The Buses fame, reprises his 1968 role as Sheridan; a third-rate holiday camp entertainer dreaming of comedy.
