The CW is developing a spin-off from its long-running drama series Supernatural which stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.
The possibility of a spin-off was first raised by the show’s executive producer Bob Singer at Comic Con on Sunday. There are few details regarding the spin-off but TV Line reports that a new character will be introduced during the latter half of Supernatural’s 9th season.
The new character will feature in an episode, which will serve as a “back-door pilot” for the proposed spin-off.
Supernatural launched back in 2005 on The WB and was one of the shows to make the transition over to The CW and unlike other shows has remained a firm fixture in the schedules ever since.
The CW is launching one spin-off in the coming season; The Originals which is spun-off from The Vampire Diaries and stars Joseph Morgan, Claire Holt and Daniel Gillies.
The Originals is the second attempt at a spin-off from the supernatural drama; the first was The Secret Circle, which was originally intended to be a spin-off, but during its development became a separate show with similar themes.
The CW has eyed spin-offs from its shows before; Gossip Girl had a “back-door pilot” for a prequel series that was not picked up due to low ratings.
