The New Orleans based spin-off will star Vampire Diaries cast members Joseph Morgan [pictured right], Claire Holt, Daniel Gillies and Phoebe Tonkin.
The Originals will launch on The CW on Monday 3rd October immediately after the fifth season premier of the parent series but its regular slot will be Tuesdays at 8pm – where it will move to on the 8th October.
The Originals will face some very tough competition in the slot from ABC’s highly anticipated Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from writer Joss Whedon and CBS’s NCIS which is the highest rated drama on broadcast television. Despite the heavy weight competition The CW boss Mark Pedowitz is confident The Originals will perform well.
Pedowitz told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour “We’re comfortable where it’s sitting,” he said when asked if the network ever considered a timeslot switch. We believe these are people that the fans have known for the last three years and we hope that built-in equity allows the fans to come. And we hope Julie Plec, who is such a talented showrunner, will create a show that allows others to come. I’m actually somewhat confident that that will continue its fanbase that’s very different than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’
The Originals’ show-runner is Julie Plec who is also a producer on The Tomorrow People and The Vampire Diaries. Plec recently teased the supernatural premise of The Originals and its New Orleans premise means the drama could potentially run and run.
