Starz-mediumTobias Menzies has been cast in Ron Moore’s new Starz series Outlander.

The British actor has been cast as Jonathan ‘Black Jack’ Randall and his 20th century counter-part Frank in the time-traveling sci-fi series, reports TV Line. Outlander follows Claire Randall, a married nurse from 1945 who finds herself transported back to 1743 where she is thrown into an unknown world where her life is under threat.

In 1743 Claire meets Jonathan who looks like her husband from 1945 but she soon discovers they couldn’t be more different.

The casting of Tobias Menzies was revealed by author Diana Gabaldon who wrote the series of novels which Outlander is based on. The writer revealed the casting via Twitter. Tobias Menzies will be known to Game of Thrones fans as Edmure Tully; brother of Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) who appeared during the HBO’s third season.

The actor also played Marcus Brutus in the historical drama Rome and his other roles include appearances in Eternal Law, Doctor Who, The Shadow Line, The Deep and Spooks. Menzies will appear in next year’s drama The Honourable Woman.

Outlander is being adapted for Starz by Battlestar Galactica writer Ron Moore. Production on the series will take place in Scotland.
