The American premier of The White Queen, on premium broadcaster Starz, rated well with viewers.
The ten-part historical drama is based on The Cousins War novels by Philippa Gregory (who also penned The Tudor series of books which includes The Other Boleyn Girl). The drama is set during the War of the Roses a series of dynastic civil wars which gripped England during the late 15th century.
The White Queen is a co-production between the BBC and Starz with two versions filmed; the American version includes more explicit scenes which could not be screened on BBC One. The drama stars Max Irons, Rebecca Ferguson, Janet McTeer, Faye Marsay, Amanda Hale, James Frain, David Oakes, Aneurin Barnard and Juliet Aubrey.
According to Starz the premier – which aired over the weekend – was seen by 2.1 million viewers with figures rising to 2.6 million when repeats are factored in. The drama will continue on Starz on Saturday evenings at 9pm.
In the UK The White Queen is nearing its conclusion with the penultimate episode aired on Sunday. The drama has struggled in the ratings and reviews have been very mixed with criticisms of its historical accuracy. However, the drama has proved to be a hit with ATV Today‘s critic Queenie Le Trout.
