More4 is to air a six part series Monty Don’s Hard Craft which will explore the world of traditional craftsmanship with skilled experts teaching keen amateurs the skills they will need to turn the hobby they enjoy, into a contemporary job they love.
Britain has a proud tradition of making things by hand, from iron mongers and blacksmiths to glass blowers and stone masons, and these skilled workers have played a huge role in our national heritage, literally shaping Britain.
We wanted to shine a light on Britain’s great heritage of craftsmanship, just as its being discovered by a new generation. – Nick Hornby, Commissioning Editor for Features at Channel 4
Monty Don’s Hard Crafts will celebrate the brilliance of the UK’s working crafts men and women, as highly accomplished professionals. Each week a traditional craft will be profiled and experts, along with Monty Don, will assess the abilities of three highly skilled amateurs competing for the opportunity to change their jobs.
The amateur craft men and women will show case their skills in an attempt to impress the experts. The tradesman or woman who excels the most will win the support they need to make a living from their craft with the backing of established trade organisations easing their path to business success. With the opportunity to change their lives at stake, the pressure is on the amateurs to use their traditional skills in a modern world to impress the experts.
The series will air on More4 in 2014.
