Low Ratings Greet Whitechapel’s Return

WhitechapelITV‘s gritty police drama Whitechapel returned on Wednesday evening to low ratings.

The fourth season of the drama starring Rupert Penry-Jones, Phil Davis and Steve Pemberton had 3.7 million viewers at 9pm while an additional 300,000 watched an-hour later via ITV’s time-shift channel. Last night’s season premier represents a ratings low for Whitechapel which has previously enjoyed strong ratings for ITV.

Whitechapel was narrowly beaten at 9pm by BBC One‘s genealogical series Who Do You Think You Are? which had 3.9 million viewers; an hour earlier Celebrity MasterChef had 5.2 million viewers.

Elsewhere on Wednesday evening the Celebrity Big Brother eviction was seen by 1.9 million viewers. At 10pm Australian drama Wentworth Prison – the re-imaged Prisoner Cell Block H – starring Danielle Cormack and Kris McQuade – pulled in 1.3 million viewers.

  1. Maybe that’s because Whitechapel is not showing up on BBC America! It is a far better series than Broadchurch, but when I tried to watch season 4 it is not there!
