Showtime-MediumThe Lone Ranger actor Harry Treadaway will play Victor Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful.

The actor is the latest casting announced for the forthcoming Showtime drama from Skyfall duo Sam Mendes and John Logan. Penny Dreadful will provide origin stories for popular characters from horror literature such as Dorian Grey, Dracula and Frankenstein.

The term Penny Dreadful originates from the 19th century and was the term for a type of popular fiction published during the Victorian era. The ‘penny dreadfuls’ were typically enjoyed by the working classes and contained ‘lurid’ but popular stories – in some ways the serialised format of the novels were an early form of soap opera. The novels were a penny to buy, hence the term, with storylines spread over multiple editions.

Harry Treadaway was most recently seen on the big-screen in Disney‘s The Lone Ranger which stars Johnny Depp. Disney recently warned it expected to make a loss on the big-budget film because of the millions it has spent on promoting it. Treadaway’s television credits include Truckers and Cape Wrath.

The cast of Penny Dreadful also includes Billie Piper, Josh Hartnett and Reeve Carney as well as James Bond actors Timothy Dalton, Eva Green and Rory Kinnear.
