The drama series is based on an acclaimed Danish drama which became a worldwide hit and created the new internationally recognised genre of Nordic-Noir. The Danish series, titled Forbrydelsen in its native country, starred Sofie Grabol as detective Sarah Lund and ran for three seasons; in the UK it was broadcast on BBC Four.
The American remake stars Mireille Enos and has recently completed its third season on AMC. The gritty drama was originally axed at the conclusion of its second series but was saved at the last minute after AMC struck a deal with the show’s producers Fox TV Studios.
Now it has been axed once more and its unlikely the series will be saved this time around. Fox TV Studios is quoted as saying it was “extremely proud of all three seasons of The Killing” and “would have loved to produce a fourth season for AMC”. While fans may hope another broadcaster picks up the series it seems unlikely.
The success of The Killing around the world prompted other Scandinavian dramas such as Borgen and The Bridge to be picked up by international broadcasters. The Bridge is getting an English/French remake titled The Tunnel and will be broadcast by Sky Atlantic. The series has also been remade for American audiences.
