Starz-mediumStarz‘s adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander has found its female lead in the form of Irish actress Caitriona Balfe.

The forthcoming drama – which will be filmed in Scotland – is being adapted for television by Ron Moore. In August it was reported that Rome actor Tobias Menzies had been cast in the lead dual role and now it has been revealed that Caitriona Balfe has been cast as Claire Randall; the lead female role.

The character of Claire Randall is a married nurse from 1945 who travels back in time to 1743 where she meets Jonathan (Tobias Menzies) who is her husbands doppelganger in appearance but not in personality. Also recently cast in Outlander is Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh. The series will also star Sam Heughan.

Caitriona Balfe has appeared in films such as Crush and shows such as The Beauty Inside and H+.
