The New Orleans based spin-off from The Vampire Diaries features Joseph Morgan as original hybrid Klaus along with fellow Vampire Diaries alums Claire Holt as Rebekah, Daniel Gillies as Elijah and Phoebe Tonkin as Hayley.
In the UK The Vampire Diaries airs on ITV2 and it was widely expected spin-off series The Originals would as well. However, it has been revealed that digital channel Syfy has acquired the UK rights instead.
Adam Collins, director of the UK Syfy channel, said “With such an established and successful heritage, and US network credentials, The Originals is our biggest acquisition since V in 2010. Its narrative is edgy and contemporary, and has something for fans of The Vampire Diaries and new viewers to the franchise, alike. We are hugely excited to be giving the world’s original vampires centre stage in our autumn line-up.”
The Originals will also star Charles Michael Davis, Leah Pipes and Daniella Pineda and showrunner Julie Plec has already teased there could be crossovers between the spin-off and its parent show – beyond the already announced cast members moving over to the new series. Any such crossovers would therefore prove tricky for UK viewers to follow with the two shows airing on different channels.
In America The Vampire Diaries‘ fifth season premiers on The CW on Thursday 3rd October at 8pm. It will be followed by the series premier of The Originals at 9pm but from 8th October The Originals will air on Tuesday evenings.
