Entertainment Weekly has confirmed news first reported by Deadline that Marvel is looking to develop a television spin-off for the character of Agent Carter. The news comes just days before the television debut of the highly anticipated Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC. If the Joss Whedon produced series is a success its likely the franchise will be expanded further with the Agent Carter series getting the first throw of the dice.
The character of Agent Carter is played by Hayley Atwell and appeared in the Captain America movie and will reprise her role in the forthcoming sequel. The character also appears in a short film, first played at Comic Con, which will be featured on the Iron Man 3 blu-ray release. It is speculated that any such Agent Carter series would be set post-World War Two
If the series is given the green-light it will be one of a growing number of spin-offs on television not just ABC. This season will see the launch of several spin-offs such as Once Upon A Time In Wonderland (ABC), The Originals (from The Vampire Diaries, The CW) and Chicago P.D (from Chicago Fire, NBC).
There are already a number of future spin-offs in development such as the proposed Supernatural spin-off, The Flash based spin-off from Arrow and the recently announced Walking Dead spin-off.
Established spin-offs (and franchises) still on-air include NCIS & NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order: SVU, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy and Major Crimes. Previous notable franchises – currently off-air – include Stargate, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
