Actor and comedian Les Dennis is to join the cast of Coronation Street as petty criminal Michael Rogers.
Dennis is best known for his long running stint on Central Television’s game show Family Fortunes on which he held the reigns from 1987 to 2002. He was also a regular on comedy shows during the 1980s notably Russ Abbot’s sketch series.
Previous serious soap opera roles have seen him appear in Channel 4’s Brookside as Mr Evans, Tom Walker in The Bill and Crossroads as Doctor Harry Richmond.
His Coronation Street character and exact storyline details are being kept under wraps, but his character of Michael Rogers will find himself caught up in the lives of a family on the street after breaking into their house. Les begins filming at the ITV Granada Salford studios from Monday.
I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. It has always been my favourite Television programme. Mixing high drama with some of the best comedy on screen.
I’ve loved it since the beginning. I grew up watching all the amazing characters in the show. I now not only have the chance of meeting them, but also working with them. It doesn’t get better than that.
– Les Dennis
Dennis shot to fame following his appearance, and winning, ATV’s talent series New Faces in 1974.
