Homeland has been renewed for a third season by Showtime.

A further 12 episodes of the drama have been ordered by the network to air in 2013.

Showtime president David Nevins said: “The Emmy wins for Homeland have certainly set the stage for a great second season.

“The writers, cast and crew of Homeland continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride, growing audiences week after week.”

The series, which has proven a ratings success both in the US and in the UK, recently picked up three top awards at the Primetime Emmys, winning the Lead Actor (Damian Lewis), Lead Actress (Claire Danes) and Outstanding Drama accolades.
