Sky One HDSky One has ordered A Touch of Cloth, a spoof detective drama written by Charlie Brooker and Daniel Maier and starring John Hannah, Suranne Jones and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Sky 1 HD has commissioned Zeppotron, Endemol UK’s comedy and drama production arm to produce A TOUCH OF CLOTH (1 x 120), a spoof of every British crime drama made in the last decade. Based on a story by Boris Starling (Messiah) the screenplay was written by Charlie Brooker (Dead Set) and Daniel Maier (Harry Hill’s TV Burp), with Ben Caudell, Peter Holmes, Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris. The programme was commissioned by Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy, Sky Entertainment.

“After you’ve seen A TOUCH OF CLOTH you’ll never be able to watch another detective show again. Not because it’s a devastating pisstake, but because you’ll have smashed your TV to pieces in a disappointed fury.” – Charlie Brooker, co-writer

A TOUCH OF CLOTH is an all-encompassing parody of every police procedural ever written. It stars John Hannah (The Mummy, Spartacus) as DCI Jack Cloth – a maverick, heavy drinking loner who has thrown himself into his work following the mysterious death of his wife. The damaged, haunted Cloth is teamed with plucky no-nonsense sidekick DC Anne Oldman, played by Suranne Jones (Coronation Street, Unforgiven). Together the pair investigate a series of increasingly grisly murders and find themselves on the trail of a devious killer. As you do. If you’re a detective.

The case leads Cloth and Oldman from leafy forests to sinister lock-ups, from the luxury home of an arrogant TV chef to the cold dissection rooms of vampish forensic pathologist Natasha Sachet (Daisy Beaumont), packing in as many jokes as humanly possible along the way. Their boss, A.C.C. Tom Boss, played by Julian Rhind-Tutt (Green Wing, The Hour) repeatedly demands results, fast. No, faster than that. Faster! Slow down. Not that much. Hold it there. Yeah, precisely that fast.

“Witty, naughty and unashamedly silly – Charlie Brooker gives the British TV Detective genre a right good comedy kicking with this one-off special for Sky 1 HD.” – Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy, Sky Entertainment

“It’s like AIRPLANE! for a detective series except for not being POLICE SQUAD”. – Daniel Maier, co-writer,

“Having tackled zombies in DEAD SET, A TOUCH OF CLOTH is a very funny and reliably corpse-strewn homage to the best of British cop shows. We’re delighted to have such a wonderful cast and such a great detective in John Hannah, who we’re sure will get to the bottom of things. But not too quickly, or the final 15 minutes will consist of awkward whistling.” – Annabel Jones, Executive Producer, Zeppotron

A TOUCH OF CLOTH is part of Sky’s commitment to increase its investment in original British content by 50% over the next three years. By 2014, Sky plans to invest £600 million a year in British programmes across its portfolio of channels. This commitment follows the success of home-grown content such as Sky 1 HD dramas MadDogs and Thorne, the BAFTA-winning documentary Flying Monsters 3D and comedies Trollied and Mount Pleasant. A TOUCH OF CLOTH will be executive produced by Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker for Zeppotron, directed by Jim O’Hanlon (House of Saddam, Emma), and produced by Adam Tandy (The Thick of It, Come Fly With Me).
