Sky to launch F1 channel in 2012

Sky Sports have announced they will be launching a brand new channel exclusively for Formula 1 in March 2012.

The new dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and 2 or the HD pack of channels. On Sky the channel will be on 408 with a reshuffle of other Sky Sports channels to come.  There will be a Standard Definition channel available to those who don’t have HD. The channel will also be available on Sky Go.

It isn’t clear yet if Virgin Media customers will receive this channel.

The channel will have all Practices, Qualifying sessions and Races Live. Races will also be advert free. Sky have also promised lots of new and extra features pre and post race.  Steve Rider, veteran broadcaster, has been signed to be part of a series of new documentaries which will air early next year. The first documentary is being filmed by Rider and Sky in Sao Paulo, Brazil this weekend.

Barney Francis, The Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: “Formula 1 followers are hungry for more and we want to give them the ultimate experience. It’s not just every minute of every race but a channel devoted to Formula 1.”

There is very little word of the on air team that will be on Sky as yet. So far Nigel Mansell has near confirmed himself being part of coverage and Rachel Brookes Tweeted she was going to be part of the team for Sky Sports News. The rumours circulating are that Sky Sports rugby presenter Simon Lazenby will present. With BBC’s David Croft and Martin Brundle jumping ship to be in the commentary box.
