BSkyB is to re-brand digital channel Virgin1 as Channel One following its acquisition of Virgin Media Television.

 

BSkyB is to re-brand digital channel Virgin1 as Channel One following its acquisition of Virgin Media Television. Earlier this year Sky bought the package of channels owned by Virgin, such as Bravo and Living, for a deal worth £160m although the Office of Fair Trading is now examining the deal to see if there are any regulatory issues. Virgin1 currently airs a mixture of programmes from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air to episodes of The X Files and Star Trek Voyager and fellow series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Virgin1 will re-launch as Channel One in September with a new schedule and marketing campaign. The channel will broadcast ABC’s “re-imaging” of V – a remake of the classic 1980s series about an alien invasion – which was previously shown in the UK on the Syfy channel. ABC has ordered a second season of V despite somewhat lower ratings than expected – it chose the drama over new series FlashForward which had a promising start but quickly tumbled down the ratings chart.
