While the five-part series may not have sunk in the ratings just yet, the show has been universally panned with everyone from Jeremy Vine to Frankie Boyle tweeting a negative view of the production.
Malone, who is well known for her role in Channel 4 drama Shameless (pictured), told a radio station’s listeners Splash! is just one of many ‘celebrity obsessed’ shows which is “garbage”.
“…on a serious note I’m an actor, not a celebrity. It’s the big fat cheques that make me happy.” She said on Juice FM, adding, “unfortunately, you have to do this garbage.”
“Noting the good-money paid for appearances on such lowbrow programming she continued, “That’s why I’ve done ‘Celebrity Come Dine With Me’, ‘Celebrity Four Weddings’ – which I won – and ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, which I knew I’d only be in for 15 days.”
She discussed the latest ITV celebrity programme, hosted by Gabby Logan and Vernon Kay, which sees Bronze Olympic athlete Tom Daley teach personalities, of varying fame, to dive.
“I’m 50 years of age in two weeks. I haven’t seen my final swimming costume yet – but I hope it’s going to be a tent…. Diving off a three-metre board into an 18ft pool is absolutely horrendous.”
She told listeners to the radio station not to keep her in the series as it wouldn’t affect her pay packet.
“Don’t keep me in ‘Splash!’. I still get the same money if I do one heat or three heats, so don’t vote for Tina Malone. Thank you!”
Splash! peaked with over six million viewers on Saturday night, riding on the back of the London 2012 interest in sport. Shameless is currently recording its final series.
