Strong start for Ripper Street

Ripper-StreetBBC One drama Ripper Street, starring Matthew MacFadyen and Jerome Flynn, got off to an impressive start on Sunday evening.

The period police drama – set in 1880’s London – is a co-production between the BBC and BBC America. It is part of BBC America’s drive into producing original programming with drama series Copper recently renewed for a second season as part of the broadcasters ambitions to attract new viewers.

The first episode of Ripper Street, I Need Light, launched on BBC One at 9pm and pulled in an impressive 6.1 million viewers. Starring alongside MacFadyen and Flynn in the series are Adam Rothenberg, MyAnna Buring and Clive Russell. The drama is set in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders in Whitechapel and partly deals with the paranoia that the notorious and brutal serial killer will strike again.

Ripper Street continues on BBC One on Sunday evening at 9pm
