As widely expected the Green Arrow themed drama Arrow has been picked up for a series by The CW. The drama, which The CW hopes will be a worthy ratings successor to Smallville, will star Stephen Amell (Vampire Diaries/Private Practice/Dante’s Cove).
According to Deadline the Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries has also been picked up for a series by The CW. While the prequel may have been criticised by some its still hotly anticipated and again The CW has high hopes for it. The drama would fit perfectly with Gossip Girl should the teen drama be renewed.
The Beauty and the Beast remake, based on the 1980s television series on CBS, has also been given a season order according to Deadline. The CW is not the only broadcaster with a Beauty and the Beast drama in the works; ABC also has. Cult, a mystery thriller from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (who also are behind The Carrie Diaries) has been picked up for a series as well – Cult stars Matt Davis of The Vampire Diaries. Medical drama First Cut has also received a series order.
The five pick-ups is something of a record for The CW which has already indicated it wants to air more original series’ during the next season. However, even with that amibiton in mind some of The CW’s currently programming will need to be axed to make way for the new raft of shows. That doesn’t bode well for the likes of Nikita, Gossip Girl, Ringer and The Secret Circle all of which have yet to be renewed. Nikita and Ringer are favourite to be axed while Gossip Girl is expected to receive a new final season order.
