Universal are to adapt Stephen King’s epic fantasy series The Dark Tower into movies and a television series. Universals film and TV divisions are joining together for the epic adaptation of King’s novel series. Universal will produce three films and a television series based on The Dark Tower novels – of which there were seven novels, some short stories and comic books. Adapting The Dark Tower series for film/television isn’t a new idea but it’s been stuck in development hell for some time. J.J Abrams, of Fringe/Star Trek, was involved with one previous attempt via Bad Robot Productions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Ron Howard will direct the first film and the first season of the television series. The television series will be written by Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman who will possibly write the script for the first film as well. Also onboard as producers for the film series, according to THR, are Brian Grazer, Kerry Foster, Todd Hallowell and Erica Huggins. The plan is for the first film to be released followed by the first season of the television series which will bridge the gap for the viewers between film 1 and film 2. The second film will then be released followed by the second season of the television series.
