Weekly Poll: Should the Government allow the BSkyB takeover?

SkyAt the tail end of this week it emerged the Coalition Government was to give the green-light to Rupert Murdocs takeover of BSkyB after plans to spin-off Sky News were put forward. This week’s poll is asking whether the Government really should allow the planned takeover.

At the tail end of this week it emerged the Coalition Government was to give the green-light to Rupert Murdocs takeover of BSkyB after plans to spin-off Sky News were put forward. The road to this point has been a rocky one full of twist and turns.

First there was the Daily Telegraph sting on Vince Cable in which he said war had been declared on the Murdoc Empire. To some that was music to their ears but it was politically costing for Cable who was stripped of his powers to decide over the BSkyB takeover. David Cameron gave the powers to Jeremy Hunt instead but questions were quickly raised over that decision. Later it emerged that Cameron had met James Cameron at Rebekah Brooks over the Christmas period – that also raised questions.

Now it seems though the plans to spin-off Sky News as an independent broadcaster has won the argument for Rupert Murdoc and News Corp. The takeover of BSkyB is likely to now go ahead – but should it? Should we allow a media titan to be born whose revenues will dwarf even that of the BBC? Should we allow a media company to become some dominant and possibly stifle competition? Or is the government right to allow News Corp to takeover the remaining shares in Sky?
