It seems many moons ago when Nick Berry, fresh from his stint in EastEnders, was the face of ITV’s new cop-drama, Heartbeat. Back in the 1990s the Yorkshire based was hugely popular with over 12 million viewers per episode. Even the departure of Nick Berry in the late 1990s didn’t dent its ratings which remained steady – in fact ratings remained healthy until just two years ago.

 

So why has the series, and its spin-off The Royal, been cancelled by ITV? Why did ratings for the once popular Sunday evening drama plummet? Was Heartbeat stuck in the 1960s for too long?
