On this Day 1973: A visit to Edward Green shoemakers

OTD, April 2nd 1973…

Peter Green visited the Edward Green and Co. Ltd, a boot and shoe manufacturers in Northampton.

The company was established in 1890. And it has always been about hight quality over fast turnaround as only around 250 pairs of shoes are completed a week. Peter interviews owner Frank Green and his nephew Michael Green; they talk about their recent orders, the long manufacturing time and their use of materials.

The company was sold in 1977 by Michael Green to an American leather entrepreneur, Marley Hodgson. It was later taken over by another bespoke shoemaker, John Hlustik. It is currently owned by the late Hlustik’s partner Hilary Freeman 135 years after it was founded.
