Alternatives to Bleach for a ‘healthier bathroom routine’

A surprising hygiene warning has been issued by a bathroom expert at Plumbworld…

1 in 5 UK households are using a common toilet product that could harm both health and home. Bleach, a regular go-to for toilet cleaning, may pose hidden risks to your wellbeing, your bathroom surfaces, and your plumbing.

Plumbworld spoke with Dr Sarah Linwood, an environmental health specialist, to uncover the risks of using bleach-based toilet cleaners and safer alternatives for a healthier bathroom routine.

The Hidden Dangers of Bleach-Based Toilet Cleaners

Skin and Eye Irritation
“Bleach can cause significant irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes,” warns Dr Linwood.
“Even small amounts of bleach can lead to chemical burns or inflammation, which is dangerous.”

Respiratory Issues
“Bleach also releases toxic fumes, especially in poorly ventilated spaces, which can irritate the respiratory system,” Dr Linwood adds.
“Breathing in these fumes can lead to shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches.”

Chemical Reactions
Dr Linwood highlights that mixing bleach with other cleaners, such as ammonia, can create toxic gases that are harmful to your health.

Damage to Your Bathroom

Corrosion of Plumbing
Dr Linwood explains that bleach can cause corrosion to plumbing components like toilet tanks, pipes, and seals.
“This damage can lead to breakdowns and expensive repairs.”

Surface Damage
“Bleach can degrade bathroom surfaces like tilesgrout, and sink basins over time. The harsh chemical can break down these materials, leading to discoloration and damage.”

Flooring Risks
Spills from bleach-based cleaners can stain or warp surfaces, particularly on wooden or laminate floors, causing lasting damage.

Safer, Natural Alternatives for a Clean Bathroom

Baking Soda & Vinegar
This natural combination can deodorise and clean effectively without the risks associated with bleach. It helps break down grime and deodorises pipes.

Citric Acid
A gentler option to hydrochloric acid, citric acid can remove limescale without harming your health or bathroom fixtures. Perfect for homes with hard water.

Enzyme-Based Cleaners
These biodegradable cleaners are effective, safe for your plumbing, and kind to the environment.

Hot Water & Lemon Juice
A simple solution of hot water and lemon juice can help keep toilets fresh and stain-free without harmful chemicals.

Dr Linwood says: “Natural cleaning alternatives can be just as effective as bleach. They’re safer for both your family and your bathroom.”
